The Grasshopper rooms for Early Years care and Pre school education for children from 3 - 5 years are very large,  colourful, attractive and stimulating. The walls showcase the children's work and reflect the current topic they are learning about in their key groups.

Working in partnership with Renfrewshire Council, we follow Curriculum for Excellence and actively promote a wide range of subject areas each day to cover the individual interests and talents of all the children.  There is also a particular focus on literacy and numeracy skills and health and wellbeing and children's individual development is detailed within their Learning Journeys for parents to access at any time.

The layout of the Grasshopper Room enables the children to enjoy a variety of activities including; Sand and water; role play; nature and interest tables; construction; science; baking; arts and crafts; computers; jigsaws and enterprise and citizenship activities.

Independence and self help skills are encouraged in this age group; alongside shared values and mutual respect. These are developed through discussion, planned activities, sharing, helper & buddy systems, Golden Rules, reading and role play.

Dance and movement, sports coaching, gym and drama take place throughout the week and children can take part in French lessons if they wish.

Outdoors, the children can learn to grow their own herbs, vegetables and flowers in the garden, as well as have fun in the playground with our wide range of resources. Great use is made the nearby parks, Scout Hall and local tennis club for additional experiences and regular trips are arranged to RSNO and local theatres.

We try to ensure that every week in nursery is different and exciting for the children - from celebrating festivals from around the world to participating in nursery activities such as the Christmas Play or fundraising for local groups. Our Eco School programme takes us into the local community in supporting Houston as a Fairtrade village and the children get involved in local events such as the Houston Carnival each year.

We have strong relationships and excellent transition programme in place to support children leaving for school which includes joint activities, visits and lots of professional dialogue with the local primary teachers to ensure this important next step is one the children are really ready for when the time comes.
